City of Melbourne Road Safety Plan
Development of a new road safety plan for the City of Melbourne.
The development of the new plan was based on a radical departure from traditional road safety plans. Firstly, the plan was based on the socio-ecological model of human behaviour combined with the Swedish developed 'Safe Systems' approach. Secondly, the plan focused on the needs of the most vulnerable road users, namely walkers, bicyclists and motorcyclists (in that priority). This focus aligned with the Safe Systems approach and the evolving nature of Melbourne into a city where people and place take priority over cars and traffic.
The recommendations proposed in the plan, while acknowledging the many positive urban design changes in the city, focused on creating an environment that enabled and motivated movement by sustainable modes of travel.
The Age newspaper described the plan as "progressive".
